Four more states have joined California and others to ask a federal judge that she hold Microsoft to its antitrust settlement for another five years.
New York, Maryland, Louisiana and Florida filed papers with US District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly late last Thursday asking her to continue monitoring Microsoft’s compliance with the consent decree that the company struck with federal and state regulators in 2002. The four states added their voices to those raised by a California-led group of six states and the District of Columbia earlier in the week in asking for a five-year extension to the decree oversight.

Firefighters battled stubborn wildfires across Southern California on Saturday, but scattered showers brought a welcome improvement in conditions.Tropical moisture flowing from the south replaced the hot, dry Santa Ana winds that roared in a week earlier and spread fires over more than a half-million acres, destroying more than 2,300 structures, including 1,700 homes. The number of deaths directly attributed to the fires officially rose to seven. Officials confirmed that the flames killed four suspected illegal immigrants whose charred bodies were found near the U.S.-Mexico border on Thursday, said Jose Alvarez, a public information officer for San Diego County emergency services. Identification of the victims was continuing.Although more than a dozen blazes were surrounded, containment of nine other blazes ranged from 97 percent to just 25 percent.

BORA-BORA, French Polynesia - A dream landscape emerged as our dinghy sped through turquoise waters toward the uninhabited South Seas islet of Tapu. On a triangular speck of sand and coconut palms, blossoms of red hibiscus, white gardenia and yellow plumeria bobbed on the water at land’s edge.
As we stepped from the boat, a sommelier offered flutes bubbling with Dom Perignon. Behind him, china and crystal sparkled on a dining table positioned in shallow water at the edge of the lagoon. A French sous-chef worked nearby, his grill partly hidden by palm fronds.
It was just another day in paradise for the staff of the St. Regis Resort, Bora-Bora, where producing dream scenarios is part of the job. On this April afternoon, staffers were helping a couple celebrate an anniversary, and I had tagged along.

The neighborhood grocery store in the East Village is closing after a short six-month stint.
Its a very sad day, said Brian Borchardt, of the Village Market at 325 E. Fifth St. Theres just not enough traffic coming into the store. Were probably ahead of our time here.
The 2,000-square-foot grocery store opened in early April, but failed to catch on with neighboring residents and workers in the area, he said.
We had a very loyal client base, but just not enough of them, Borchardt said.
The store is holding a closing sale likely through the next two weeks or until inventories are depleted, he said.
ST Howard and restaurateur Steve Logsdon, who owns Basil Prospers Lucca in the East Village, were co-owners of the Village Market.
